Gig Harbor is the one town on our route that involves a toll booth, and we treat it as a scheduling fact rather than a surcharge: bridge calls are grouped so the van crosses with a full morning or afternoon on the peninsula. The housing here skews newer and larger — Harbor Hill, Canterwood, the Gig Harbor North developments — with double-oven ranges, big French-door refrigerators and second refrigerators in garages, which fail in their own particular ways in an unheated space.
Unlike the Tacoma side, much of the peninsula is on wells and district supply that carries real mineral content. Ice makers cloud, dishwasher spray arms load up, and heating elements do develop scale over the years — the opposite of the story across the bridge.
